Throughout Sikh history the Sikh Gurus were patrons of the arts, encompassing visual art, poetry, music, spoken-word and architecture. From designing many levels of meaning into the architecture of Gurdwarae, connecting raag to shabad, calligraphy of Gurbani, singing dhadi vaaran and poetry, art was used as an important vehicle to express and mobilize. The arts are a seminal form of education and introducing art making allows all to learn to engage in critical thinking and experience the transformative power inherent in the creative process. In this event “The Art of Sikh Revolution” we hope to explore both these aspects of Sikhi-inspired art, through appreciation to connect to Sikhi and through art-making to be inspired by the artistic process.
